2023 NZ Chinese Film Festival
The 2023 New Zealand Chinese Film Week took place in Auckland, Wellington, and Christchurch, featuring the screening of 16 films across the three cities. The lineup included Creation of the Gods I: Kingdom of Storms, which won the Best Feature Film award at the 36th China Golden Rooster Awards, the short film The Grassland by Tibetan director Pema Tseden, and the feature film Balloon, which explores the dilemmas faced by women.
After the screening of Creation of the Gods I: Kingdom of Storms, director Wuershan engaged in a discussion with the audience and his New Zealand counterparts. He emphasized the importance of international collaboration in telling compelling Chinese stories through cinema. He acknowledged the contribution of New Zealand professionals to the success of Creation of the Gods and announced plans to collaborate with New Zealand special effects teams for the post-production of the second and third installments of the series. Wuershan expressed optimism about the potential for further cooperation between the Chinese and New Zealand film industries.
The New Zealand Chinese Film Week was organized by the New Zealand Chinese Film Week Organizing Committee and hosted by New Zealand Menwai Culture Communication Co., Ltd., with support from the Auckland Chinese Cultural Centre.
2023 Featured Film
The 2nd New Zealand Chinese Film Week gracefully unfolded from November 18 to November 26, 2023, immersing audiences in a week-long cinematic journey.
During this enchanting event, 16 films were brought to life on the silver screen, each weaving a vibrant tapestry of themes, diverse artistic expressions, and captivating cultural nuances.
The festival, grounded in New Zealand, traces the development of the western film industry and humanities, landforms, customs by the theme of Legendary and Fantasy.
It pays tribute to the classics and uses the excellent Chinese legendary films in recent years as the primary medium to show the road of industrialisation of the characteristics of the Chinese film industry and to look forward to the future.
